Objective: Edit an audio file for use in Unity

If you’re like me and are making games as an indie developer you need to utilise all of the free open-source tools that you can. For this article, I will be using Audacity to edit an mp3 that is too long for my game needs.

This is a relatively easy thing to do when you know how and I will show you how I did it for my game.

To follow along with Audacity you can find it here, I also got my mp3 from freesound.org. You will need to create a free account for freesound.org but it allows you to download a lot of free game sounds, please take note of the license for the sound that you’re downloading. I generally go for the creative common license which means you will be able to use the sound in a commercial product.

First, open Audacity and then drag in the game sound that you have.

Now you can click and drag with your left mouse button, highlight the area that you want to remove from the file. Once it is highlighted, you then just press the delete key. That’s it, your file is edited.

You will then need to export the file as an mp3. See below.
